What is a printer maintenance kit?

Worn printer roller padding, paper dust and abrasive toner can reduce print quality and cause paper jams as well as premature wearing on gears. The Printer Maintenance Kit contains parts recommended by the OEM that should be changed periodically to prevent downtime of the printer.

Which spare parts does a maintenance kit contain?

The printer manufacturers often perform life tests in order to find out which parts typically wear out or have to be replaced as well. Correspondingly, the contents of maintenance kit can be very different. The following parts may be included:

  • Transfer, pick-up and feeding roller

  • Transfer Roller Assembly

  • Plastic hook tool to remove the transfer roller

  • Fusing assembly

  • Separation pad

  • Feed-roller-unit

  • Feeding unit

  • Cooling fan

  • MP pick-up roller

  • PC pick-up roller

  • LC pick-up roller

  • Installation tools

  • Instructions

  • Gloves

How often is a
maintenance kit needed?

How often maintenance is due and whether a maintenance kit has to be installed every time, this depends on several factors:

  • Print application

  • Operating environment

  • Toner thickness

  • Printing media

  • Toner Applied

Are there maintenance kits for every printer?

No, the OEM determines whether or not a printer model will have a maintenance kit. Some third party parts vendors will create their own maintenance kits based on historical research. Theses type of kits will have part numbers that are outside of the traditional OEM part number schema.

Do all parts vendors put the same parts and quantities in their maintenance kits?

No, that is why it is highly recommended to compare and verify kit contents. Some vendors will reduce the quantities or types of parts in kits to appear to have a lower price.

Can anyone replace a printer maintenance kit?

Many printer makers like HP have designed the printer maintenance kit to be user friendly. They will contain levers instead of screws to secure the fuser in place and be easy to get to. It is dependent on the model. Some kits are very difficult to replace and require special tools. Your parts vendor will be able to guide you.

Resetting the maintenance message.

Similar to the message you get in your car telling you to perform oil change some printers will require the user to clear the reset message that is displayed on the control panel. Most maintenance kits will come with step by step instructions on how to perform the reset.

Other fusers will have technology built into the fuser that will do it for you.
