Transfer Belt, ITB Causing Excessive Calibration Or Print Alignment Issues In Color HP Printers


HP laser printers have long been recognized for their reliability and print quality. However, like any electronic device, they can encounter issues from time to time. One common problem that users may face is excessive calibration or print alignment errors. These issues can result in misaligned text, blurry images, or other print quality problems. In this article, we will explore some troubleshooting steps to help you solve excessive calibration or print alignment issues on HP printers.


Symptoms of Excessive Calibration Or Print Alignment Issues

Under normal circumstances the HP color printers will perform a calibration when a transfer belt is replaced however it has the ability to do more than that unless you ask it to. Sometimes you may have to perform a couple calibrations to get the printer up and running. If the printer has any of the following;

  1. 54 error on the control panel or event log.

  2. Printer performs multiple cleanings cycles or calibrations .

  3. Printer alignments issues like colors not aligning up or color or test shadows.

Potential Causes

  1. Faulty toner cartridges leaking to much toner particulate.

  2. Printers used beyond the OEM recommended page interval.

  3. Printers in need of cleaning

Solution To Solve Excessive Calibration Or Print Alignment Issues


The Printers Density Detect assembly, located inside the right door (Photo Below) has four sensor windows that take readings from the transfer belt as it performs a calibration.

These sensor windows can get covered in toner and paper dust (See above photo, you can see how typically filthy the inside of this printer can get) The containments on the lens window can cause excessive calibration and print alignment issues.


You can see two of these sensors when you open the right door and remove the transfer belt and if you open the front door and slide the density detect assembly cover towards the rear of the printer, it will expose the other two sensor windows.


Wipe these sensor windows with and towel and maybe some alcohol and see if those calibration issues go away, hopefully that takes care of the issue. This also applies to the CP3525, CP4525, M652/M652 and a bunch of other color lasers.


Excessive calibration or print alignment issues can be frustrating, but by following the troubleshooting steps mentioned above, you can often resolve them on your own.
