Is HP Requiring Printer Serial Numbers Before Downloading Firmware?

Are You Seeing HP Requiring Serial Numbers Before Downloading Firmware?

Introduction

HP has long provided firmware updates for its printers via their support website, allowing technicians to download updates freely. However, some technicians are now reporting that HP is requiring printer serial numbers before allowing access to firmware downloads.

Is this a new security measure, a policy change, or a temporary issue? We want to hear from you!

What Technicians Are Reporting

Several service providers and IT technicians have noted that HP’s firmware download process now prompts users to enter a valid printer serial number before access is granted. This is a shift from the past, where firmware files could be downloaded without verification.

Possible Reasons for This Change:

  • Security & Device Authentication: HP may be trying to prevent unauthorized firmware modifications or third-party updates.

  • Tracking & Warranty Control: Restricting firmware downloads could be a way to limit updates to registered or supported devices.

  • Preventing Downgrades: Some HP printers use firmware updates to block non-HP supplies, and this could be a way to enforce those restrictions.

  • Temporary Website Change: It’s possible that this requirement is a temporary website update or regional rollout.

How This Impacts Field Technicians

If HP continues to enforce this serial number requirement, technicians may face challenges such as:

  • Delays in servicing printers due to extra verification steps.

  • Issues with bulk updates for fleet management.

  • Difficulty accessing firmware for out-of-warranty or refurbished units.

  • Possible Collection of customer meta data for strategic purposes.

Workarounds & Solutions

Some technicians have found that:

  1. Logging into an HP Partner or Enterprise account may still provide firmware access without serial verification.

  2. Using HP Web Jetadmin can sometimes push updates without manually downloading firmware.

  3. Trying different regions of HP’s website may bypass the requirement in some cases.
